The majority of newly qualified plumbers over the age of twenty five choose to work for themselves in the domestic market. It stands to reason that this is the case because the jobs and the money never dry up for committed and diligent workers.

Most domestic tradesmen and women find customers through other people they've worked for. A training college will cover all your trade skills, but your attitude and manners will be down to you. You just don't know where the next job's coming from... When you're in someone's home, try not to invade their privacy too much.

Plumbers working in the commercial environment usually work regular hours. Domestic plumbers are best not to restrict themselves too rigidly though. If you're willing to work some evenings and weekends on emergency jobs and quotations, householders will soon get to know you can be trusted.

With a basic qualification you'll be able to work on a range of plumbing jobs. You'll also be able to qualify in supplementary skills which will allow you to take on bigger jobs yourself. If you take Part P for example you'll comply with the regulations for domestic electrical work. If you have a broad ranging skill-set you'll be more in demand. Your work will be more evenly spread all year round. You won't have to work around plasterers or electricians timetables if you can do small jobs yourself.
